Playful Learning is a collaborative
project

Playful Learning transforms everyday public spaces where families work, play, and live into opportunities for learning. Playful learning takes moments such as waiting for the bus, passing time at the laundromat, or waiting at the doctor’s office and turns them into fun learning experiences for both children and their families. This project brings together the science of learning and urban design to infuse cities with playful learning opportunities to benefit adults and young children, Birth to age five.

How it works

Playful Learning Goals

  • Support and improve the quality of parent-child interactions at community installations and at home
  • Create vibrant community spaces that increase brain-building opportunities focused on early math, social-emotional learning, and/or literacy
  • Create accessible installations that engage caregivers and children in meaningful learning during everyday tasks

The Process

Guiding Principles

  • – Be authentically engaged from the project’s onset

    – Identify sites with the help of local public and nonprofit leadership

    – Customize installations based on local assets and needs

    – Lead ongoing care for the project

  • – Layered with existing family engagement approaches

    – Reinforce locally driven messages

  • – Meeting families where they live, work, and play

    – Not stand-alone destinations

  • – Strengthen adult-child interactions to maximize the potential for positive child development outcomes.

    – Seed ideas and build skillsets in parents that will positively shape how they interact with their children on an everyday basis – i.e. building skills that are transferable across environments.
